How to Use This Fishing Map

Use the markers as trip-planning starting points, not as turn-by-turn navigation. The artificial-reef locations are based on public FWC reef data. NOAA also maintains hundreds of sanctuary mooring locations across the Keys, but many popular coral-reef mooring fields are inside protected zones where fishing is restricted or prohibited. We will only label a location as a fishing spot when its status is clear.

Reef & Mooring Locations: Use the Zone Rules First

Zone verification update: NOAA lists Pickles Reef, Snapper Ledge, Crocker Reef, White Banks, Horseshoe Reef, Carysfort Trench, North Dry Rocks and Wolfe Reef as “Other Locations,” not as Sanctuary Preservation Areas. However, that does not automatically make every part of those reefs open to fishing. Pickles Reef East and Horseshoe Reef now include habitat-restoration areas with additional protections, and Carysfort Reef itself is a no-fishing Sanctuary Preservation Area. We therefore treat these as reference locations until the exact fishing marker can be placed outside restricted boundaries.

Safe map rule: a NOAA mooring buoy is never being used by Florida Keys Fishing HQ as proof that fishing is legal. Always verify the exact position against NOAA’s current marine-zone map and current FWC regulations before fishing.

NOAA maintains nearly 500 public mooring buoys throughout Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and identifies additional reef and offshore locations including Pickles Reef, Snapper Ledge, Crocker Reef, White Banks, Horseshoe Reef, Carysfort Trench, North Dry Rocks and Wolfe Reef. These are excellent planning references, but a mooring buoy does not automatically mean fishing is legal at that location.

Some NOAA moorings are inside Sanctuary Preservation Areas, conservation areas or restoration areas where fishing is prohibited or otherwise restricted. Before dropping a line, confirm your GPS position against the current NOAA marine-zone map and current FWC/federal fishing regulations. We will only promote a reef as a fishing location on this map after its zone status has been checked.

NOAA reference markers added: These points use published NOAA mooring coordinates and are planning references only. NOAA specifically warns that buoy coordinates may change or be inaccurate and should not be used for navigation. Always verify the current sanctuary zone map, FWC rules and a proper nautical chart before fishing.

Map Key & Protected Areas

  • Bridge markers: public bridge-fishing areas with links to our bridge guides and tackle recommendations.
  • Reef / wreck markers: public FWC-listed artificial reefs and wrecks. Coordinates are planning references, not navigation instructions.
  • Protected reef zones: NOAA Sanctuary Preservation Areas and other restricted zones require extra attention. Fishing is prohibited in SPAs except limited catch-and-release trolling where specifically allowed by current sanctuary rules.

Before fishing any reef: check the current NOAA marine-zone map and FWC regulations. Zone boundaries and rules can change, and a nearby legal fishing location can sit surprisingly close to a no-fishing area.

Know the Protected Zones

Some of the best-known Florida Keys reefs are inside Sanctuary Preservation Areas where fishing and collecting are prohibited. Reef and wreck markers on this map are planning references, not permission to fish. Always check the current FWC and Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary rules before dropping a line.

Coordinates and map locations are for general reference only and are not for navigation. Reef material can move or degrade, buoys can be missing, and conditions change. Use current nautical charts and verify access and regulations before your trip.
