Seven Mile Bridge Fishing Guide | Florida Keys

• Floridakeysfishinghq@gmail.com

The Seven Mile Bridge area near Marathon is one of the most recognizable fishing zones in the Florida Keys. Moving water, bridge structure, deep channels and nearby flats create opportunities for snapper, tarpon, jacks, barracuda, sharks and other Keys species. This guide focuses on practical ways to fish the bridge area from legal public-access areas and by boat.

Where to Fish

The modern Seven Mile Bridge carries U.S. 1 across Moser Channel. Anglers should use designated public fishing areas rather than stopping on the active highway bridge. The historic Old Seven Mile Bridge area provides pedestrian access toward Pigeon Key, but always follow posted signs and current access restrictions.

Best Tide and Current

Bridge fishing is usually about current. Concentrate on periods when water is moving through the channel and work the down-current side of pilings, shadow lines and current seams. Around peak flow, heavier sinkers may be necessary to keep bait near the structure. During slower water, lighter presentations can look more natural.

What You Can Catch

  • Mangrove snapper around structure
  • Tarpon moving through the channels
  • Jack crevalle and barracuda
  • Sharks in deeper moving water
  • Seasonal mackerel and other bait-chasing predators

Baits and Rigs

Live pilchards, pinfish, shrimp and cut bait are useful bridge baits. For snapper, try a light knocker rig or small sinker with fluorocarbon leader and a circle hook. For larger fish, step up leader strength and tackle. Match sinker weight to the current instead of automatically using the heaviest weight in the box.

Tackle

A medium-heavy spinning or conventional setup with braid gives anglers enough power to turn fish away from bridge structure. Leader strength should be adjusted to water clarity, target species and abrasion risk. Check your leader frequently because concrete and marine growth can damage it quickly.

Bridge Fishing Tips

  • Fish current seams instead of blindly casting into open water.
  • Keep baits close to structure without letting them wrap pilings.
  • Bring a landing net appropriate for the access point.
  • Use circle hooks when required and handle released fish carefully.
  • Never fish from an active traffic lane or an area posted closed.
