Long Key Bridge Fishing Guide | Florida Keys

• Floridakeysfishinghq@gmail.com

The Long Key area offers classic Florida Keys bridge fishing where strong tidal flow funnels bait through the channel. The historic bridge system along the Florida Keys Overseas Heritage Trail includes designated fishing access, including a cantilevered fishing platform at Long Key.

Where to Fish

Use designated fishing platforms and legal public-access portions of the historic bridge. Do not stop or fish from active U.S. 1 traffic lanes. The bridge area separates broad flats and channels, so moving water concentrates bait and predators.

Target Species

  • Mangrove snapper
  • Tarpon
  • Jacks
  • Barracuda
  • Sharks
  • Seasonal mackerel and other predators

Best Baits

Live shrimp, pilchards and pinfish are good starting choices. Cut bait can be effective when the water is moving hard or when targeting larger predators. Keep a sabiki setup available when bait schools are present where its use is legal and practical.

Rigs and Tackle

For snapper, a knocker rig or light sliding-sinker rig with fluorocarbon leader works well. Increase sinker weight only enough to maintain contact with the strike zone. Medium-heavy tackle with braid helps pull fish away from bridge structure.

How to Fish the Current

Cast up-current and allow the bait to sweep naturally toward pilings and current seams. During fast current, shorten the presentation and fish closer to the structure. Around slower tidal periods, lighten the sinker and leader when water clarity allows.
